Short bio
Tyrome E. Smith is an innovation strategist and the founder of Go In Now, LLC, based in Bowie, Maryland. Across more than 25 years in government, higher education, corporate innovation, and startups, he has trained more than 1,500 federal personnel in Lean Startup methods at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, advised founders on customer discovery and SBIR and STTR funding, and built innovation partnerships with HBCUs. He is a Fellow of the A.K. Rice Institute, a former member of the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership advisory board, and co-host of the podcast What Problem Are You Solving?

What Problem Are You Solving? (What PAYS) is a Lean Startup podcast I co-host with Jon T. Ruark and Adam Berk. The show has run since 2019, with a recent series through July 2025, and works through the questions founders and institutional teams actually get stuck on: when to pivot, what a business model has to prove, and why so much innovation activity never reaches a decision.
A representative episode: Public and Private Innovation (June 2025) with Mark Munsell, former Chief Data Officer at the Department of Defense, on where public mission and private-sector speed actually meet.
